About

GainsGuard Group

GainsGuard Group is a specialized financial firm. We help retirees and pre-retirees protect the savings they spent a lifetime building, and we help business owners keep more of what they’ve earned when they sell.

Life’s biggest transitions carry real risk. A market downturn in retirement can erase years of saving. A business sale can bring a capital gains tax bill in the millions. And the advice is often scattered, with each advisor looking at one piece. It’s stressful, and it’s hard to know who to trust.

We start with you, not your numbers. We ask what you want your future to look like, help you see your choices clearly, and then bring your CPA, attorney and other advisors together around one plan. We don’t manage investments. We focus on a few specialized strategies and do them well.

Meet The Team

Hi, I’m Dave Biddle, Your Guide

Founder & President

When Dave Biddle meets someone new, his first question is always the same: What’s important about money to you? The answer reveals what matters most, the future they’re working toward and the bigger dream behind it. For more than three decades, Dave has helped people build toward that future. He began his career in financial services in 1992 and founded Biddle Capital Management in 1996, growing it to advise roughly $700 million in assets.

Nearly half of that work served company retirement plans governed by ERISA, where Dave’s decisions shaped the retirement security of about 4,000 people. An early advocate for the fiduciary standard, he wrote Managing Retirement Plans to Meet Today’s Challenges, part of his Fiduciary Wisdom series, with a foreword by ERISA attorney Fred Reish. He also created the Gratitude Plan, a pooled employer plan framework that helped smaller employers offer stronger retirement benefits.

Along the way, he learned that numbers are only half of retirement. The other half is how people feel when markets fall and security is in question. Clients with part of their savings protected from market swings slept better, stayed the course and made better decisions. That lesson is the heart of Wealth Guardᴵᴾ.

Sam Biddle

Director of Operations

Sam Biddle is Director of Operations at GainsGuard Group. He grew up around the industry, watching his father work with clients on some of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, an early look at how much clarity matters during major transitions.

At GainsGuard, Sam works alongside his father, President Dave Biddle, designing the frameworks, tools, and processes behind the firm’s tax strategy, exit planning, wealth preservation, intellectual property consulting, and income planning work. Day to day, that means shaping the internal systems and client- facing materials so processes run efficiently. He’s especially drawn to intellectual property, the hidden value in ideas and businesses that often goes unnoticed and is building his expertise across the full scope of financial instruments as he continues to grow within the industry.

How We Help

Wealth Guardᴵᴾ

You spent a lifetime saving. Now the question is whether it will last. Market drops, rising costs and a long illness can each put retirement at risk. Wealth Guardᴵᴾ positions part of your savings to stay steady when markets fall, so you can live with confidence instead of worry. It can also include planning for chronic care, so a health event doesn’t become a family crisis.

Tax & Transition Planning

A long term tax plan is critical to retirement success. Income tax could consume 30% of your total income and assets during retirement. Selling your business or real estate may be the biggest tax bill of your life. Without proactive tax planning, income and capital gains taxes can cost millions from what you spend decades building. Our affiliated CPAs and tax attorneys focus on income and capital gains strategy, and they work alongside your current CPA, not in place of them. The earlier we start, the more options you have.

Ideas Guardᴵᴾ

The systems, methods and know-how behind your success are often your most valuable assets, and the easiest to lose. When Dave sold his investment management division, a proven system he built changed hands without ever being documented or valued. Ideas Guardᴵᴾ helps you identify, document and protect that intellectual property, so it’s recognized and valued before a sale.

Chronic Disability Planning

A plan made in advance is a gift to the people who will care for you.

A chronic disability is hard on the person living with it, and hard in a different way on the people who care for them. Usually one child steps up, often the one who lives closest, and ends up managing the doctors, the bills and the day-to-day. Some leave their jobs to do it. Many burn out.

We’ve lived this. Dave’s mother spent five years in memory care, and nearly all of her savings went to her care. The financial cost was great. The emotional cost was greater.

We start with your wishes. Then we talk through the support around you, including who is available to help and who has the medical or financial know-how to lead. We also review your assets to see whether transferring some of the financial risk of care, at home or in a facility, to an insurance company makes sense for you.

Everything comes together in your Care BlueprintIP. It summarizes where things stand and lists our insurance and financial recommendations, along with items to review with your attorney, such as powers of attorney and advance directives. Most important, it records each person’s wishes in their own words. It’s written to be shared with your children, so when that time comes, everyone has clarity about your wishes.

Legacy Planning

An estate plan is only as good as the people who carry it out.

Estate planning is about making your family’s wishes come true. Your attorney handles the legal side, and that work is essential. But the conversations that decide whether a plan works rarely happen in a lawyer’s office.

When those conversations are skipped, families pay for it later. We once worked with a family where one son was certain the farm should be his. He sued his 90-year-old mother and never spoke to his siblings again.

That’s why we start with a private conversation with you, the parents, over two Zoom meetings. We discuss who you trust with what. Choosing an executor or a health-care decision-maker is like hiring someone for a job, so we talk with you about what each of your children does well. Sometimes the right answer is an independent professional who takes the pressure off any one child. We’ve also seen problems when two children are named to the same role.

From that conversation we prepare your Legacy BlueprintIP. You review the draft with us in the second meeting, then take the final version to your attorney, who uses it to build the legal structure around what you intend.

“When the parents aren’t there, there’s no more referee.”
— Dave Biddle

    Retirement & Inflation

    Retirement & Inflation Guide
What To Know And How To Prepare

Inflation has been a top-of-mind concern for many investors, particularly retirees. Due to the pandemic, many business were forced to lower prices, halt production, and even close their doors, causing a gap between the supply and demand of goods and services. Because of this, we are currently experiencing the highest inflation rate in over 30 years! High inflation means lower dollar values, making it harder to keep up with the cost of living in retirement. We created our Retirement & Inflation guide to help you prepare for and defend your retirement savings against inflation.
